Making Images Round with Simple CSS

In the old days, we had to go to Photoshop (or some other image editor) to create rounded PNG or GIF files, to create images that were round. Now you can do this with simple CSS3 applied to your image:

style="border-radius: 50%;"

This is what my picture looks like without the CSS:

This is just one small example, where CSS3 makes much of what we used to do with Photoshop in web design, obsolete. If you want to learn CSS3, my CSS course in my IWD package will teach you fast!

Downloading the Dreamweaver CS6 Trial

Hi,

We have a huge Dreamweaver CS6 course (10 hrs of videos!) but these days, it can be hard to find a trial of Dreamweaver CS6. Adobe wants you to get into their cloud version of Dreamweaver – Dreamweaver CC.

In our Dreamweaver CS6 course, you learn much, much more than Dreamweaver … it’s really a beginners web design course. It’s also very designer centric … you build great looking websites in this course.

That said, it’s hard to learn without Dreamweaver CS6 … though the latest Dreamweaver CC is very similar, there are still differences that might trip up a beginner. So the solution is to download the trial of the new Dreamweaver CC and deal with the differences, or you could buy an older copy of Dreamweaver CS6 – be sure it’s legal!

Hidden Treasure!

But hidden deep in Adobe’s site, is a place to download a free trial of Dreamweaver CS6:

https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/cs6-product-downloads.html

I just downloaded it today (April 17th 2015) … so you should be good.

Why bother? There just a lot of great stuff in the Dreamweaver CS6 course and some people rather just own Dreamweaver CS6 and not rent Dreamweaver CC. Then again, you don’t need Dreamweaver to build great sites.

Top 3 Image Editors – alternatives to Photoshop

Hi,

Photoshop is powerful, but it’s overkill for 99% of web developers/designer needs. It’s not expensive at $9.99/month for individuals, and $19.99/month for business use. But over a few years, this could add up!

The key point is that most web professionals need maybe 10% of Photoshop’s power – if that much. There are easier to learn, very capable cheaper alternatives. A few free ones too!

The short list:

  1. Paint.net – Windows only. But free!
  2. The Gimp – Strange name but powerful and free! Runs on Mac and Windows.
  3. Xara Photo and Graphic Designer – Not free, but you can buy it for $89.99. I use this all the time. It’s bloody fast!

… And there are others. The point is, there is more to Photoshop in the image editing world.

Using Google’s Free Tools to Improve your Site.

Hi,

We are currently working on what I call ‘Project Simplify’ … basically that means going through the four websites in the network:

  • KillerSites.com
  • CSStutorial.net
  • How-to-build-websites.com
  • KillerPHP.com

… and stripping away old content, simplifying the pages, updating the commentary videos … etc. It’s a time consuming job especially when you have years of content to cleanup.

Simplifying the Store – simple is better than slick.

Hi,

If you’ve come to the store in the recent past, you’ve probably noticed that our layout has changed a lot. We went from very basic to slick, and now we are back to simple – with a few additions.

Simple Sells & Slick Sucks

What we found with the ultra slick layout, was that it just confused people. It looked great, but the layout got in the way of making the site usable and I got constant messages from people try to find courses. The lesson in this, is to always lean towards simple layouts and leave the high-end design to concept sites.

Forgetting about Usability of a Website

Hi,

In this recent update of killerVideoStore.com, we concentrated on making the website look really slick. I think it has that 2012 uber-nerd feel to it. But … I also believe it fails my first test of a website: the emotional snapshot.

What is the emotional snapshot?

It is that first impression you get when you hit a site …. it is not what you think, but rather what you feel instantly. For me, the number one thing, is that the visitor feels relaxed. If they feel anxious, overwhelmed or confused … you have a problem.

… When I look at the new killerVideoStore website, I feel anxious … almost attacked by the design.  We are currently working on smoothing things out. I will blog about this as we make progress.

Learn a CMS or Learn Dreamweaver?

Hey everybody!

Recently someone asked whether they should learn Dreamweaver OR whether should they jump into a CMS like Joomla or WordPress.

What is a CMS?

CMS is short for Content Management System, and are web based programs that you upload to the server and they provide word-processor like capabilities to your website – and much, much more.

To make an analogy: you can think of a CMS as being a restaurant buffet, where you have many prepared dishes to choose from, that you can use to create your meal. Where Dreamweaver is like an electric appliance, that helps you create a meal from scratch.

You can learn more about it here:

http://www.killersites.com/blog/2008/blog-cms-wiki-compared/

… The above link points to an older blog post, but it is still good.

Anyway, the core of this person’s questions, comes down to skill-set choices and choosing the best technologies to be able to:

1. Get the most work as a web designer.
2. And to be able to build the best websites.
